Shigeru Ikushima – Clarinetist
He began violin at the age of 6, then switched to the clarinet at 12.
During his studies at the Kunitachi College of Music, he passed the French government scholarship exam and moved to France for advanced training. He studied clarinet under Jacques Lancelot at the Conservatoire National de Rouen, where he obtained the First Prize in clarinet and chamber music, and further perfected his skills with Walter Boeykens.
Winner of the First Prize at the National Soloist Competition of the French Ministry of Culture (among 100 candidates), he became solo clarinet of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra for the Mediterranean Musical Cruises, performing with legendary artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and Maurice André. He then joined the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse as solo clarinet, becoming the first Japanese musician to integrate a French wind orchestra.
During his 26 years in France, he participated in numerous international festivals, recorded nearly 80 albums (EMI, CBS Sony, Deutsche Grammophon), and performed with prestigious chamber music ensembles (wind quintet and octet).
As a soloist, he has performed with the New Japan Philharmonic, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse.
Upon returning to Japan, he now teaches at the Kunitachi College of Music, gives concerts, appears on NHK TV and Radio, records, and serves as a jury member in international competitions.
He is regularly invited to the International Clarinet Festivals in Paris and Tokyo, and has released 5 CDs under the Fontec label.
