Jerry Bergonzi (born October 21, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts) is a tenor saxophonist, composer, and internationally recognized jazz educator.
He earned a degree in music education from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1971, then founded his own label, Not Fat Records.
He gained recognition through his collaborations with Dave Brubeck, joining his quartet from 1979 to 1982 and participating in nine albums alongside the legendary pianist.
A renowned professor at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Bergonzi is also the author of the educational series Inside Improvisation (seven volumes) and the collection Sound Advice, published by Advance Music and Jamey Aebersold Jazz.
His discography is vast and prestigious, with recordings on labels such as Blue Note, Savant, Not Fat, Double-Time, and Label Bleu, among many others.
He has also collaborated as a sideman with numerous influential jazz artists.
A versatile musician, Bergonzi is also a professional pianist and bassist. He plays a signature mouthpiece by Aaron Drake and generously shares nearly 200 original compositions as free PDF sheet music.
