THE BIOGRAPHY OF RÉMI BIET

Passionate about jazz since his teenage years, this self-taught and multi-instrumentalist musician has built a career combining performance, composition, and teaching.

A former member of the Orchestre National de Jazz, he now leads the Jazz Department at the Conservatoire of Rouen and creates original works performed in France and internationally.

His career is marked by rich collaborations with prestigious musicians and ensembles.

Rémi Biet discovered jazz at the age of 15 thanks to the compilation Les Géants du Jazz. Fascinated by Don Byas’s sound in On the Sunny Side of the Street, he then decided to learn the saxophone.

Six months later, he was already playing with musicians from Rouen within the group Les Pinces à Linge.

A passionate autodidact, he then explored several instruments: double bass, to accompany Philippe Écrepont; flute, which he studied seriously; then clarinet, inspired by Eddie Daniels’ legendary album Breakthrough.

A forward-thinking and renowned pedagogue

A schoolteacher for about ten years, Rémi Biet simultaneously taught jazz at the École d’Improvisation de Jazz in Mont-Saint-Aignan as well as at the École Nationale de Musique de Dieppe, where in 1979 he contributed to the creation of one of the very first jazz classes in a French conservatory.

He obtained:

State Diploma in Jazz (1986)

Certificat d’Aptitude in Jazz (1991)

He now directs the Jazz Department of the Conservatory of Rouen and also teaches Jazz History at the musicology faculty of Mont-Saint-Aignan.

Orchestre National de Jazz – a decisive milestone

Noticed by Denis Badault during his C.A. exam, he was immediately invited to join the Orchestre National de Jazz (1991–1994).

This collaboration marked a major turning point: Rémi left the National Education system to devote himself exclusively to jazz.

Creations, collaborations, and artistic projects

Rémi Biet develops an intense creative activity, blending writing, conducting, and artistic encounters.

He has notably:

Arranged and conducted the music for the show Road Movies for

Jean-Jacques Milteau
L’Ensemble Orchestral de Basse-Normandie
Manu Galvin
(the show was also performed with the Orchestre National de France, Montréal Métropolitain, Orchestre de Tunis, and the Quatuor Ébène)

➤ Received a State commission to compose Suite Barbare for big band and barrel organ, with Pierre Charial

➤ Played in a quartet with guitarist Lionel Benhamou, alongside Stéphane Huchard and Jean-Jacques Avenel

➤ Created original music, notably for Novecento Pianiste by Alessandro Baricco, and À Cordes et à Cœur, a personal and significant work

Big Band – a recognized expertise

A historic saxophonist of the Rouen Big Band (1st alto since 1978), he carried out numerous transcriptions, offered his compositions, and took over its direction in 1988 with Philippe Carment after the death of Christian Garros.

He has also been called to play in several major ensembles:

Big Band Lumière – Laurent Cugny

New Big One – Jean-Michel Pilc
