Rémi Biet discovered jazz at the age of 15 thanks to the compilation Les Géants du Jazz. Fascinated by Don Byas’s sound in On the Sunny Side of the Street, he then decided to learn the saxophone.
Six months later, he was already playing with musicians from Rouen within the group Les Pinces à Linge.
A passionate autodidact, he then explored several instruments: double bass, to accompany Philippe Écrepont; flute, which he studied seriously; then clarinet, inspired by Eddie Daniels’ legendary album Breakthrough.
A forward-thinking and renowned pedagogue
A schoolteacher for about ten years, Rémi Biet simultaneously taught jazz at the École d’Improvisation de Jazz in Mont-Saint-Aignan as well as at the École Nationale de Musique de Dieppe, where in 1979 he contributed to the creation of one of the very first jazz classes in a French conservatory.
He obtained:
➤ State Diploma in Jazz (1986)
➤ Certificat d’Aptitude in Jazz (1991)
He now directs the Jazz Department of the Conservatory of Rouen and also teaches Jazz History at the musicology faculty of Mont-Saint-Aignan.
Orchestre National de Jazz – a decisive milestone
Noticed by Denis Badault during his C.A. exam, he was immediately invited to join the Orchestre National de Jazz (1991–1994).
This collaboration marked a major turning point: Rémi left the National Education system to devote himself exclusively to jazz.
