Zachary Costello is an award-winning saxophonist, passionate about creating immersive and accessible musical experiences that break down barriers between performers and audiences.
Born in South Korea and raised in Maryland, he has been recognized on both national and international stages.
He recently won the Grand Prize and the Young Artist Award at the Naftzger Competition, Second Prize at the 2025 Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition, and was a prizewinning finalist at the 2024 Andorra Saxfest International Competition, where he performed as a soloist with the National Classical Orchestra of Andorra.
He also earned Second Prize at the MTNA National Competition in the United States and received the Hans Schaeuble Award in Switzerland in 2022.
Zachary is also a dedicated chamber musician, serving as soprano chair of the award-winning PULSE Quartet, an ensemble committed to bringing music to life and closer to audiences in unexpected spaces.
As artists-in-residence at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, PULSE actively contributes to the Sound Garden Project, which aims to plant music in unconventional spaces.
The quartet has received the Lift Every Voice Prize at the 2024 Fischoff Competition, First Prize at both the Glass City and NOLA Chamber Music Competitions, and Second Prize at the Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition.
They also performed at the Arosa Klassik Festival in Switzerland.
Alongside his performing career, Zachary is deeply engaged in arts administration and outreach projects, with the goal of making classical and contemporary music more widely accessible.
He has participated in masterclasses with Vincent David, Lars Mlekusch, Christian Wirth, Timothy McAllister, Otis Murphy, Christopher Creviston, and Stephen Page.
A graduate of Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Music, where he studied with Joseph Lulloff, Zachary Costello is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music under Chien-Kwan Lin, where he also serves as a Graduate Assistant.
