Jonathon Nickell is a passionate pedagogue and performer of the saxophone and wind instruments.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Performance from the University of Kentucky, where he studied classical and jazz saxophone with Miles and Lisa Osland, clarinet with Dr. Scott Wright, and bassoon with Peter Simpson.
During this time, he led a full-time teaching studio, saxophone quartets and choirs, while also working in several schools in Kentucky.
He then earned a master’s degree in saxophone performance at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He is currently pursuing further saxophone studies at the University of Missouri–Kansas City under the direction of Zach Shemon.
In parallel, he teaches weekly at Liberty North High School, at Harmony Project Kansas City, and works for Peak Performance Woodwinds.
An active performer, Jonathon appears with many ensembles in Kansas City across a variety of styles.
He recently performed André Waignein’s Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra with the UMKC Orchestra.
As a multi-instrumentalist, he also takes part in pit orchestras, chamber ensembles, and regularly commissions new works, notably with Martin Mendez for their percussion/saxophone duo.
In 2022, he distinguished himself at the International Aeolus Competition, ranking among the top candidates.
