THE BIOGRAPHY OF WILSON POFFENBERGER

American saxophonist, versatile and visionary, Wilson Poffenberger combines virtuosity, pedagogy, and innovation.

As a soloist, chamber musician, and committed creator, he champions contemporary music through commissioned works, interdisciplinary projects, and high-level teaching.

An inspiring ambassador of the saxophone and musical creation.

Described as an "admirably talented musician" (The News-Gazette), saxophonist Wilson Poffenberger, based in South Georgia, is highly sought after as a soloist, educator, chamber musician, and improviser.

 

He is currently a saxophone professor at Valdosta State University, teaching classical and jazz saxophone, jazz improvisation, woodwind methods, and chamber music.

Wilson Poffenberger holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where his research focused on creating a resource for free improvisation for classical saxophonists.

 

He also holds a Master of Music from Youngstown State University, a Bachelor of Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and completed additional studies at the CRR of Boulogne-Billancourt (Paris) and at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (Contemporary Classical Music Performance Program – CCMP).

 

Wilson Poffenberger exclusively plays Selmer Paris instruments and is an official JLV Sound Ambassador.
