THE BIOGRAPHY OF MARTÍN CASTRO TUBIO

Always ready for new experiences, the Spanish-born saxophonist Martín Castro has performed in more than a hundred concerts in world-renowned venues such as the Prince Mahidol Hall, Grafenegg, the Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music of Ukraine, the Cuban National Theatre, and the Central Conservatory of Music of Beijing.

His musical activity has taken him to countries such as China, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine, Bratislava, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, and Colombia.

Based in Vienna, Martín Castro graduated from the Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears. He is currently pursuing his studies at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien with Michaela Reingruber and Barbara Strack-Hanisch.

 

He has also attended masterclasses with artists such as François Guye, Jean-Marie Londeix, Thomas Indermhüle, Timothy McAllister, Lars Mlekusch, Daniel Gauthier, and Marie-Bernadette Charrier, to name just a few.

 

Among his highlights are a soloist concert performing music by J. Ibert with the Webern Sinfonietta conducted by Vladimir Kiradijev, and two concerts performing music by Cristóbal Halffter with the Orquesta del Lyceum de la Habana conducted by Jose A. Mendez and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba conducted by Lars Mlekusch.

 

As a chamber musician, Martín has won prestigious competitions, including the 88 Concurso Juventudes Musicales de España, the Thailand International Wind Symphony Competition, Impro-Parcours 2, ArtJove Musica de Cámara, the Opus 2019 International Music Competition, and a silver medal at the 1st Vienna International Competition.

 

He has been invited to festivals such as Kultursommer Nordhessen, Festival Jong Talent Schiermonnikoog, Two Days and Two Nights Odessa, Singapore Saxophone Symposium, and III Festival Internacional Bellas Artes Cali.

 

As a soloist, he has also won the Leonard Bernstein-Institutswettbewerb, the 22nd semi-final of the Osaka International Competition in Vienna, the 4th Danubia Talents Liszt International Competition, and received scholarships from the Anny Felbermayer Fund and the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung.

 

Martín Castro has given saxophone and chamber music masterclasses at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Luis Gianneo Conservatory of Music.

 

He has also served as a jury member for the Hunan Wind Instrument Competition 2018, the I Concurso Latinoamericano de Cuarteto de Saxofones, and ArtJove 2019.

 

Engaged in new music, he has worked with composers such as Wolfgang Rihm, Gabriel Erkoreka, Ramon Lazkano, Felix Ibarrondo, Simone Movio, Volodymyr Runchak, Anton Alcalde, Javier Girotto, Aaron Siebert, Donald Yu, and Antonio Lauzurika.
