Versatile and remarkably gifted musician, saxophonist-composer-arranger Sergio GALVAO (also clarinetist, flutist, and pianist) released his first album Phantom Fish as a saxophone soloist at the age of 48.
Born in Brasilia and long based in Rio de Janeiro, he has established himself on the international scene with his powerful and refined playing on the tenor and soprano saxophones.
Produced by bassist-composer Amanda Ruzza, the album blends Brazilian roots and New York influences, carried by a contagious groove and inventive harmonies.
Born into a family almost entirely made up of musicians, Sergio is the sixth and youngest child.
He was strongly influenced early on by his older brothers and by masters such as Hugo Lauterjung, Manoel Carvalho, and Luiz Gonzaga Carneiro.
The devoted listening of John Coltrane marked a decisive turning point in his artistic path, leading him from the clarinet to his instrument of choice: the saxophone.
Trained at the Escola de Música de Brasília in the 1980s, he later joined the Afro-Brazilian group Obina Shok, alongside Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa.
His prolific career includes more than 300 recordings with major artists, as well as countless appearances on radio and television.
A regular guest at international jazz festivals, Sergio Galvão performs not only in concert but also through masterclasses, workshops, juries, and training sessions all around the world: Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Portugal, Italy, England, Germany, France, Australia…
