Born in Côte d’Ivoire, Samy Thiébault followed a classical path at the CNR of Bordeaux before joining, in 2004, the jazz class at the CNSM of Paris, from which he graduated in 2008.
At the same time, he obtained a Master’s degree in Philosophy with highest honors from the Sorbonne (2001).
In 2004, he released Blues For Nel, the first opus of a rich discography: Gaya Scienza (2007), Upanishad Expériences (2010, first album of his label Gaya Music Productions), and Clear Fire (2013).
Very quickly, he opened up to dance, theatre, and cinema: music for the performance Les Autres Sois (2022), the film L’Air de la mer (Nadir Mokneche, 2023), and En Son Absence (Édouard Tissot, 2014).
In 2013, he became Professor of Jazz and Saxophone at the Conservatoire of Choisy-le-Roi.
The release in 2015 of Feast Of Friends, a tribute to The Doors, marked a turning point.
In 2016, he invited the trumpeter Avishai Cohen for Rebirth. Then came Caribbean Stories (2018), the first part of a triptych on creolisation, prefaced by Christiane Taubira.
In 2019, he fulfilled a ten-year dream with Symphonic Tales, a suite for symphony orchestra and jazz quintet, blending 20th-century French music, spiritual jazz, and Indian classical music, with the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne.
In 2021, he concluded his triptych on creolisation with Awé!, recorded between Miami, Cuba, France, and São Paulo, bringing together leading musicians such as Dafnis Prieto, Manuel Valéra, Brian Lynch, Yunior Terry, and Eric Legnini. Strings and a chamber orchestra enrich the repertoire.
Currently, Samy is preparing In Waves, an album in quartet form, integrating sequencers and electronic music, with an intimate, poetic, and committed approach, inspired by the ocean.
On stage, he has played in the world’s greatest festivals and venues: Olympia, Marciac, Nice, Sète, Moscow, Montreal, Hong Kong, New York…
His playing, described as “Coltranian in the best sense of the word” (Nouvel Obs) and *“dancing between trance and spiritual message” (Libération), makes him one of the most emblematic musicians of his generation.
